Season One Finale

'The Originals' Daniel Gillies Talks Hayley and Elijah's 'Doomed' Romance, Plus Finale Scoop

TV Line

Well, folks, it’s all come down to this. The fates of the Mikaelsons, their city and their newborn heir all hang in the balance during tonight’s season finale of The Originals (The CW, 8/7c) — and not to stress you out, but Daniel Gillies promises a “tragic” conclusion.

Below, Gillies reflects on Elijah’s recent suffering — including the “complication” of his relationship with Hayley — and teases the “heartbreaking” finale that will propel us into Season 2.

TVLINE | I can’t believe we’re already at the end of Season 1. How did this happen?
Someone described the experience of the first year with a child as the longest shortest year of your life, and in a weird way, that’s how I feel about The Originals in its first year. It’s been the longest shortest year of my life. It still feels like yesterday that we set out on this journey, but if I really look back at it, there’s such a dense archive of memories and experiences. It’s been amazing.

Daniel Gillies: 'The Originals' Season 1 Finale Birth is a 'Nightmare' and More Teases

Zap2It

There's a baby coming in "The Originals" Season 1 finale, and it's not really working out how Elijah, Klaus and co. had planned (considering Hayley is MIA and not safe in the Originals' mansion).

"It's exactly what they didn't want to happen," star Daniel Gillies tells Zap2it. "Considering they were moving heaven and Earth in order to provide her some kind of refuge and sanctuary, it was almost prophetically written in stone that it was just going to be undone in the most unholy way."

'The Originals' finale: Daniel Gillies on the show's 'Darth Vader', and 'the beginning of the end for Elijah'

Entertainment Weekly

From the moment The Originals was pitched as a Vampire Diariesspin-off, it was talked about as the story of Klaus Mikaelson’s redemption, among other things, and what that would mean for this literally ancient family of vampires. And now, one season later, we’re only hours away from Klaus’ baby being born and what could be the start of a whole new Klaus. Then again, we could be hours away from Klaus going down his darkest road yet.

But one thing seems certain: Thanks to a romantic entanglement with Hayley, Klaus’ older brother Elijah will be just as affected by any outcome. And Daniel Gillies, the man behind Elijah, has spoken before about how this series is as much about Klaus’ redemption as it is about the undoing of Elijah. “What’s exciting about a character like Elijah is I think that I feel like he has an enormous threshold for this punishment,” Gillies said. “It’s partly to do with how I believe his psychological architecture is constructed. I think that he’s someone who carries an enormous amount of guilt and regret about his brother’s condition. He feels that he’s failed his brother, so subsequently, he’s this creature who follows his malevolent brother to all the corners of the earth in pursuit of this ideal that’s really as mercurial as sand between your fingers.”

'The Originals' Star Daniel Gillies Previews His 'Harrowing' Last Scene of the Season

Yahoo TV

On camera, "The Originals" star Daniel Gillies is serious and brooding, elegant and gentlemanly.

Off camera, he's the set's biggest jokester. His co-stars have repeatedly called him the funniest guy on set — Joseph Morgan recently told Yahoo TV about their hilarious, ongoing pranking battle. His witty, dry sense of humor often leaves the cast and crew in stitches.

So, it was no wonder when we emailed Gillies some questions about this week's epic Season 1 finale, airing at 8 p.m. on The CW, he couldn't resist cutting up a little. Seriously, we can understand why "The Originals" cast are constantly cracking — because we couldn't stop laughing ourselves while reading his answers!
