The Originals Season 3

DANIEL GILLIES ON THE RETURN OF 'THE ORIGINALS': 'BUCKLE UP!'

Video Interview by 'Access Hollywood'

"The Originals" returns to The CW for its first episode of 2016 on Friday, and it's a big one.

"Julie [Plec]… she's like -- there's an old boxer called Jersey Joe Walcott. He used to fight off both feet and like as Brando used to say, 'You think you see a punch coming from the southwest and he hits you from the northeast.' That's sort of how Julie Plec is with her writing," Daniel Gillies, who plays Elijah Mikaelson, told Access Hollywood when we asked him about his reaction to the midseason premiere script. "You'll open stuff up and you'll be like, 'Oh, that's happening,' so I'm sort of used to being hit with a ton of bricks… Buckle up for Episode 10. January 29, Friday, 9/8c."

In last year's midseason finale, after a warm holiday celebration, both of the Mikaelson brothers were faced with devastating news. For Klaus, it was waking up next to a lifeless Cami, whose throat had been slit, and for Elijah, it was having to dagger his sister, Rebekah, when she realized the spell to control her had returned.

‘The Originals’ Daniel Gillies: Elijah won’t be able to cage Klaus’ fury

Interview by Zap2It

Though the holidays left the Mikaelsons close — and Klaus (Joseph Morgan) on the verge of happiness — that was never going to last. When last fans saw the final moments of the midseason finale of “The Originals,” Elijah (Daniel Gillies) was putting a dagger through Rebekah’s (Claire Holt) chest, while Klaus was waking up to find Cami’s (Leah Pipes) throat sliced open.

With all of that haunting them, the Mikaelsons are off to a tumultuous start to the new year and, according to Gillies, things are only going south from here. The actor spoke to Zap2it about the family’s struggles to retain their “kingdom,” Elijah trying to maintain some traces of his humanity and whether Klaus’ fury can be controlled after finding the love of his life dead.

Daniel Gillies, ever the charmer, recently sat down with a group of reporters on set in Atlanta to discuss The Originals Season 3. Now that Elijah knows the secrets hidden behind the red door, he's coming into his own again as a character and stepping out of Klaus' shadow.

With his own motivations and thoughts about how to protect the Mikaelson family, there's a greater than average chance that the rift between Elijah and his brother will only get deeper before they build a bridge.

How does Gillies feel about the direction his character is headed on The Originals Season 3? And what does he believe Elijah would do if Hayley were suddenly on the market? Take a look at our gallery of Gillies for the scoop!

In a world of vampires, werewolves, witches and hybrids, the stakes are always incredibly high on THE ORIGINALS.  Fortunately, for the vampires on the show, wooden stakes are generally more of just a nuisance and not the end of their existence.  But that doesn’t mean that vampires are immune to death.  In fact, for the Mikaelsons, death is circling closer than ever before.  A seer has foreseen their demise and has there is a prophecy that the Mikaelsons and all their vampire progeny will die as the result of an unholy trinity: a betrayal by friend, family and foe.  Alas, the seer was killed before further details as to who might betray them and how that is even possible.  But with death looming on the horizon a Sire War has begun as the First Generation of vampires have flocked to New Orleans to protect their individual sire lines from eminent demise.  Interesting, the First Generation seems to have struck up an uneasy alliance amongst themselves and have perhaps concocted a nefarious plan to imprison their sires to preserve an entire race of vampires.
