The talented Daniel Gillies, who is is best known for playing Elijah Mikaelson on "The Originals," recently chatted with Fashion & Style about about what is in store for his character in season 3 of the hit CW series, what it is like being a father, and much more.

You starred in "The Vampire Diaries" before "The Originals." In what ways does "The Originals" differ from "TVD," even though it's a spinoff series?
In the beginning I thought there was very little difference, but we have finally found our own independence. Because of "the mothership," particularly at the outset, we were necessarily similar in tone and texture. Over time, we have found something that is more dangerous and tragically doomed.

My fondest memory from set so far is the day I was forced to leave for the birth of my daughter.
— Daniel Gillies

You will definitely see this change during the third season, which is without question our most resonantly individual season thus far. "The Originals" season three essentially becomes this race for power where no one emerges victorious. It's beautiful.

Viewers will watch these people, this family, drift from one another because they are being pulled downward by their own inexorable ruin. Even with all of their brilliance and power, we're watching them spectacularly disappear.

Basically, the third season focuses on an ancient species desperately fighting for the last of its dignity before it departs, like an ocean liner vanishing into the sea.

Home Entertainment Review: Kingdom Come

Dork Shelf
Andrew Parker

Kingdom Come (Paiman Kalayeh, John Lyons Murphy, 2012) – I’ve been recently working on writing a piece about questions you should never ask at a Q&A following a screening at a film festival. One of those questions is “Was it a struggle to get this film made?” I say you shouldn’t ask that not because it isn’t a valid question, but because the answer in filmmaking of any kind or level will always be “Yes” and you the person you asked it to undoubtedly won’t have two hours to fully answer your question in detail as to why. The heartbreaking, yet essential documentaryKingdom Come does an exceptional job of following the struggles of an independent filmmaker trying to make a work of art on his own terms.

'TVD' star Daniel Gillies talks Katherine, Showtime acquiring his directorial debut, and his next film

Entertainment Weekly

Tonight, we see the backdoor pilot for the Vampire Diaries ’Originals spin-off, a safe bet to make The CW’s fall schedule, which will be announced on May 16. But Daniel Gillies (Elijah), who’s currently filming the second season of CTV’s Saving Hope, has something else to look forward to next month: Last October, he released his feature-length directorial debut, the drama Broken Kingdom, and Kingdom Come, the documentary following the three-year process of getting that independent movie made, online. Unbeknownst to him, reps for one of the documentary’s co-directors, Paiman Kalayeh, then began shopping Kingdom Come – which also features a score of indie filmmakers including Don Cheadle, Mark Ruffalo, Morgan Spurlock, and Kevin Smith sharing their own war stories and triumphs – to networks, and got a bite from Showtime. After viewing the documentary, execs asked to see Gillies’ movie as well. And now, both will air on the cable network May 15, back-to-back. Gillies, who wrote and stars in Broken Kingdom as an American writer who forms an unlikely union with a 14-year-old street girl in Colombia, chatted with EW about the films (which you can still stream at Brokenkingdomfilm.com) and the script he’s penning now.

Daniel Gillies Opens The Doors To His 'Kingdom'

ET Online

This was five years of my life. I essentially quit acting for three years to make this.

This is the biggest week, professionally speaking, in Daniel Gillies life. Not only will The Vampire Diaries air his Originals-focused backdoor pilot on Thursday, but he's currently filming the second season of his medical drama, Saving Hope, and it was just announced Broken Kingdom, his directorial debut, would premiere this May on Showtime!

Not only did Gillies helm the globe-hopping, emotionally-resonant drama, but he wrote, produced and co-stars along with wife, Rachael Leigh Cook. A massive undertaking that underscores what a passion project this was for the actor.

Although Gillies used a different adjective to describe the endeavor when he rang up ETonline to talk Broken Kingdom, life lessons from behind the lens and The Originals!

ETonline: This is a big week for you, Daniel. Congrats on Showtime acquiring the film!
Daniel Gillies: Oh man, I'm very blessed. I can't believe all of this is happening at once -- I feel like every day is my birthday. These are lovely complications to have. It's been a bit of a process getting the release in order, and getting all the paperwork together, so I've been sitting on this for a long time. I'm relieved we can share the films with our friends, our supporters and the world.

ETonline: Why was this such a passion project for you?
Gillies: This was five years of my life. I essentially quit acting for three years to make this. It might be more accurate to call it an "Insanity Project" than a "Passion Project" [laughs]. I'm not sure if I had to do it again that I would find the courage. Walking into that blindly with a degree of naivety I had at the time was a helpful weapon.
