Vampire Diaries: Daniel Gillies remembers creating 'the monster in the suit' via EW

By Daniel Gillies via Entertainment Weekly

With one season left in The Vampire Diaries’ run, we decided it was time to start collecting everyone’s final diary entries. Every week during the final season, EW is asking those involved with the show to look back on one of their favorite moments from the series. So grab your tissues and join us on this trip down a vampire-filled memory lane.

This week, Daniel Gillies remembers his beginning as Elijah Mikaelson…

Very little was described to me in the beginning. They didn’t know what they wanted to do with Elijah. It was never anyone’s intention to make him Klaus’ brother. He was something of a mercenary or a hit man, and I think he was destined to be eliminated relatively early in the fabric of that narrative. I was very blessed in that I had a decent character and for some reason I immediately knew he was going to be around for a while, just even reading the sides. I don’t know how I knew, I just knew instinctively that there was something interesting about him. It was just one of those lucky occasions where you have a sensation of what you feel the character is and fortunately, I immediately had a grasp of what he is.

Season 4 of The Originals is bringing big changes for the Mikaelson family, as the show is jumping five years into the future after last season’s epic finale. The Originals: Hilarious 'Mom' Tips

By Entertainment Weekly

After more than a thousand years of existence, the Mikalesons are prepared for just about anything … other than parenthood. Let’s be real: Their parents weren’t exactly the type of people you’d want them to emulate. And yet, thanks to a one-night stand between Klaus and Hayley, they’ve found themselves smack in the middle of raising a child. Thankfully, Hayley’s there to help, but even she didn’t grow up with the best parental figures in her life. In other words, we’re lucky Hope is so resilient.

The Originals: Daniel Gillies talks a deleted Esther-Elijah scene

Entertainment Weekly

When The Originals was first pitched as a Vampire Diaries spin-off, it was to be the story of Klaus Mikaelson’s redemption, with Elijah being the most reluctant to give up on his brother. So when a promo for the season 2 finale showed Elijah uttering the line, “We’re beyond redemption,” it seemed that the Mikaelsons had lost their way.

Yet when fans watched the season 2 finale, that same line was missing. For Daniel Gillies, cutting the scene meant cutting one of his favorite moments of the series.

That scene was to me one of the most enlightening scenes about the people [and] the show,
— Gillies told EW.

The scene, which Gillies acknowledged was cut for time, was re-worked by Originals writer Diane Ademu-John and Gillies himself, and featured an exchange between Elijah and his recently returned mother, Esther. “It was four or five lines,” Gillies said. “It was very heavily written in the beginning, and then myself and the very, very talented Diane Ademu-John decided that we should pair it down. So together we created this very simplified version of the scene, this exchange between the mother and [Elijah] before NiKlaus throws open the doors and says ‘Mother!’ It was beautiful.”

Daniel Gillies talks 'The Vampire Diaries' in Spoiler Room Video Edition

Entertainment Weekly

Take it from me: The Vampire Diaries is easily one of the most difficult shows to conduct interviews about because of the serialized nature of the story. Teasing – it’s an art. But I have to say, Daniel Gillies really held his own when he sat down on the Spoiler Room couch for a chat while in town recently promoting the Oct. 11 return of The Vampire Diaries and his film Broken Kingdom, out today.

Thanks to everyone who submitted questions for the actor. The fruits of your labors have produced the following scoop on Elijah’s return, the next flashback episode, and much more. Click below to check it out – and to hear Gillies say the phrase “take our pants off.”
